“A self-portrait is a way of expressing oneself, but is also a way of finding one’s self, or, more accurately, creating one’s self”. Chris Abraham.
Exploring the concepts of artist, body and self, Chris Abrahams engages with the subject matter of self-portraiture, using the body as self to construct a portrait of self. Abrahams’ interest in self-portraiture came after a period of introspection and reflection on his identity, questioning how the use of body as a tool expresses that body as self.
Through unique mark making on the surfaces of the plate, canvas and clay, he represents self through the trace of bodily movement across his chosen material. He hopes to engage the viewer’s body through their experience of the exhibition in a gallery setting.
