In the next 24 hours, 8 Australian’s will die by suicide.
In 2016, my son Nicholas died suddenly by suicide, upending my world and the lives of my family, his friends, and workmates. By night, I struggled to sleep. By day I was in a mental haze. I felt like I was on a roller coaster trying to navigate my own grief journey while managing the inconsolable loss of my other children.
Hike to Heal arises from our family's need to make meaning from our loss and a desire to help destigmatise mental health. This inaugural year Hike to Heal will hold a Scavenger Hike to raise money for Lifeline Darling Downs Creative Coping Program, between Sat 20th – Sun 28th of February, 2021. Lots of fun and great prizes to be won. Our aim is to raise $10,000 to increase the number of places available in this program.
With everything, Australia has gone through this year mental health support programs are needed more than ever.
At a time when everything else in my life seemed to be in limbo land, my husband and daughter encouraged us to resume walking with our local hiking club. At first, I was reluctant, yet, looking back, those walks were healing in so many ways that I didn’t fully recognize or appreciate at the time, for myself and my family.
The hiking trail was the birthplace of Hike to Heal: An annual event to raise awareness about suicide and mental health and raise much-needed funds to support Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Qld Ltd. The event would encourage participation in an active outdoor activity that helps develop a connection to community and capacity and resilience. A hike is inclusive as it caters to most levels of physical fitness, is not competitive, and enables time to talk as you walk.
With the support of Westbrook Focus Group and the Toowoomba Regional Council, the inaugural Hike to Heal event will be a Scavenger Hike on Mt Peel, located between Drayton and Westbrook. Given the uncertainty of Covid-19, the event will be held over a week duration: 20 – 28 Feb 2021. People will be encouraged to register as a family or team of four, complete photo challenges, solve riddles, win prizes and have fun in the great outdoors.
Participants can hike any trail distance on any day or time between those two dates, post their photos or videos on Facebook and Instagram.
